How to Wash Cloth Diapers (A Guide for Beginners)

Steps for washing CDs

Before you wash cloth diapers

Check for manufacturer’s guide. Aimerie cloth diapers have short wash instruction on wash label in tagalog and English. Yes in tagalog! We want mommies to really understand how to take care of their diapers.

You also need to decide how to store the dirty diapers until you’re ready to wash them. You can use DRY pail with lid or waterproof bags. We do not recommend using wet pails (soaking) as a storage system for dirty diapers. They tend to breed a high volume of bacteria and may even be a drowning risk for small children.

STEP 1 and 2: Remove any solid waste and Pre-rinse / Pre- wash

For formula-fed babies, or for babies who have had solids introduced into their diets, you’ll need to dump, drop, scrape, or spray the solid poops into the toilet before storing the diaper with the other dirties. Using bidet/ diaper sprayer (or even small water hose) is highly recommended because it will make the poop removal easier.

For babies that are solely breastfed, their poop is water soluble and technically doesn’t require any special removal. Just rinse them and toss these soiled diapers into the dry pail or bag.

For Urine, we recommend to prerinse all together the use diapers of the day at night to avoid ammonia smell

You can do this step right after the diaper change or wash all the diapers used all day at night.

Pre-rinse

Rinse the diapers and inserts/soakers with water then store in dry pail or waterproof bag.

Pre-wash

Rinse the diapers and inserts/soakers with water, then wash with small amount of detergent.

Rinse once or twice with water then store in dry pail or waterproof bag.

Step 3: Put the dirty diaper into a pail or bag, until you’re ready to wash it

Store your diapers in a dry pail or waterproof bag. This will not cause delamination to PUL diapers and less chance of breeding high volume of bacteria.

Step 4: Wash the dirty diapers

Use a regular warm to very hot cycle and cloth-friendly detergent to get the diapers officially clean. Feel free to add a little scoop of Aimerie Laundry Treatment to the detergent for a power boost. Aimerie LT can also neutralize acidic odors and remove protein-based stains.

Avoid using bleach (this will cancel our warranty). Bleach is a harsh chemical and easily damages fabrics if used too often. Vinegar, like bleach, has a strong cleaning acid naturally and is sometimes added to laundry loads for the value of softer, fresh fabrics; but the cleaning acids are strong, so the smallest amount of vinegar, if any, should be used.

Don’t use fabric softeners. Fabric softeners coat the cloth diaper’s fabric, cause buildup, and prevent optimal fabric absorbency.

We don’t recommend using some homemade detergents. Most recipes call for bar soap, which is very hard to rinse clean. Over time, buildup will occur, and your diapers will eventually trap more dirt in them because they’re not getting properly cleaned.

Rinse 4 times or until no visible suds.

Step 5: Air or line dry the cloth diapers

If you notice your diapers are stained, DO NOT PANIC. This is normal and does not mean that they are unclean.

The best method for drying cloth diapers is outside, on a line, in the sun. The sun defeats bacteria with freshness and gives your baby’s bottom the very best results. It also reduces staining.

Deep Cleaning Cloth Diapers

This wash treatment is designed to remove build up caused by leftover detergent and hard water minerals, which can create more suds during the washing cycles and prevent the diapers from rubbing together properly for ideal results. Deep cleaning also helps prevent smelly baby clothes and potential baby rashes. And, yes, at some point in the life of a cloth diaper it’s likely you’ll need to do this.
